It was a very fascinating and successful lecture. I have only one question.
The theory of world risk society, in my view, somehow still fundamentally rests on the old Hobbesian account of human nature, which is, of course, one drove primarily by self-preservation. The anticipation of catastrophe functions properly only through the self-preservative mode of human action: I act to avoid what I perceive as a coming disaster.
Unfortunately, this seems not the ultimate horizon for all human agents. Today, I mean, in the post-September 11 era, we witness once again that the power of ideas or ideology overthrows the Hobbesian Human nature: people act to primarily cause a self-destructive disaster in order to serve what they perceive as the supreme or divine Cause. In such cases, the drive of self-preservation (i.e. the logic of survival) simply fails to rule.
My question is: how does world risk society theory cope with this challenge?
